Project Swachh Vidyalaya Implementation

Patron/Donor company: Container Corporation of India

Purpose/scope :
about

Under the Swachh Vidyalaya project, Concor had pledged to create community toilet blocks in specific regions of the country. Taking this initiative further, the organization also decided to install water purifiers and hand pumps in select areas to improve the access to clean water. The poor quality of water and presence of chemical/bacteriological contamination has caused many water borne diseases that typically affect people from underdeveloped regions. As the implementation partner of CONCOR, Bahubali Gulabchand Foundation had the responsibility to install water purifiers in the interior districts of Assam. To do so, the project team had to begin with identifying a source and set up the infrastructure needed for the storage of clean water. Apart from this, the BGF team oversaw the setting up of a SMART school in the small, destitute district complete with digital infrastructure for students and teachers.

Delivery:

On the behest of the ONGC and CONCOR foundation, Bahubali Gulabchand Foundation enabled the installation of water purifiers in 5 schools of Baksa District of Assam and encouraged children to make use of the facility provided. This initiative has helped children to access clean and safe drinking water. The implementation of this project required our team to conduct a thorough baseline analysis based on which the implementation approach and on ground activities were planned. The interior locations of Assam are primarily occupied by local natives and tribes, making communication in common Indian dialects a challenge. The project team had to live in these areas, acquaint with the locals, understand their peculiar needs and address their apprehensions. Community meetings or Gram Sabhas were held by the team to instil confidence in the initiative and hear the concerns of the villagers. The project team also ensured the availability of infrastructure for the setting up of the SMART school. The team explained the importance of digital literacy and clean and green surroundings to the locals.

Impact :

Approximately 600 children were impacted by this program. The availability of clean water will help to radically reduce spread of water borne diseases, thereby helping children and school authorities maintain a healthy and hygienic surrounding.

This initiative also helped in integrating hygiene messages in daily school curriculum like morning assembly and prayers, & during social sciences classes. The SMART School project will become a model for the future development of schools in the area.
